Renters Abandoned by Government

21 Dec 2022

A recent survey by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism showed that 97% of private rents in Waltham Forest are unaffordable for people on benefits.

The Conservative Government has failed to raise the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) for several years. This is forcing people on benefits into the choice of destitution or leaving their friends, families, and support networks behind as they move out of the area.

Waltham Forest Liberal Democrats call for the government to immediately raise the LHA by the cost of rental inflation over the last 30 months.

Local campaigner Arran Angus said, “It is disgusting, but unsurprising, that this heartless Government are driving the most vulnerable in our society into destitution.”

Waltham Forest Council has a part to play as well. It has failed to use its powers to bring empty properties back into use.
